New Delhi: The Centre has granted Indian envoy to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi the status of a Union Cabinet minister, an unprecedented move in Indian diplomacy in recent years.

The decision to elevate Trivedi’s rank aligns with his former position as a Union Cabinet minister. The rank will help him coordinate with the Indian PMO. The decision also sends a message to Dhaka about the significance India attaches to its relationship with Bangladesh. It is also learnt that a former Cabinet minister could be named as the next ambassador to Nepal.
