New Delhi: India has taken a major step towards transforming its defence manufacturing landscape by allowing private companies to produce advanced conventional missile systems using technologies developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The move marks one of the biggest changes in India’s missile production strategy, as the government aims to increase manufacturing capacity, reduce dependence on foreign defence imports and build a stronger domestic military industrial ecosystem.
Under the new policy, private defence companies will be allowed to manufacture tactical missile systems, including those with strike ranges between 150 km and 1,500 km. The government is now identifying suitable Indian companies that can take part in large-scale missile production.
The decision is expected to accelerate India’s defence preparedness at a time when modern warfare is increasingly dependent on precision weapons, long-range strike capabilities and rapid replenishment of military inventories.
The Defence Ministry has approved the transfer of DRDO-developed technologies related to conventional missile systems to Indian industries. Under the new framework, DRDO will continue to provide technical guidance, supervision and support, while private companies will focus on manufacturing, production scaling and industrial integration.
For decades, missile production in India has largely remained concentrated among government organisations and defence laboratories. The latest move opens the door for private companies to become major players in advanced weapon manufacturing.
Indian private firms have already been supplying several missile components and subsystems. With the new policy, their role is expected to expand from suppliers to complete system manufacturers. Around 50 missile-related subsystems are currently being provided by private industries, creating a strong base for deeper participation in the defence supply chain.
The government is now focusing on private-sector manufacturing of the Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACRM), a precision strike missile system expected to have a range of 1,000 km to 1,500 km. The Pralay quasi-ballistic tactical missile, with an estimated range of 150 km to 500 km, is also part of the planned expansion.
Both systems represent India’s growing focus on strengthening conventional strike capabilities and ensuring faster availability of advanced weapons for the armed forces.
Private production is expected to increase manufacturing speed, improve stock levels and help India maintain a stronger missile inventory during future security challenges.
While India has opened conventional missile manufacturing to private companies, strategic missile programmes remain protected under government control.
The Agni missile series, BrahMos missile programme and K-series missiles have not been included in the current technology transfer plan due to their strategic importance and sensitive nature.
The government’s current focus remains on tactical and conventional missile systems, but defence experts believe increased private participation could gradually expand in the future.
The private sector’s role will not be limited to long-range missiles. The government has already initiated processes for private production of Astra Mark-I and Astra Mark-II beyond visual range air-to-air missiles through technology transfer.
Several other advanced weapon systems are also expected to involve private companies, including Next Generation Anti-Radiation Missile, Rudram-II air-to-ground missile, UAV-Launched Precision Guided Missile, Long Range Glide Bomb, Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon, Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile and Very Short Range Air Defence System. Naval missile systems, including anti-ship missiles with different ranges, are also part of the broader defence manufacturing expansion plan.
Several major Indian defence companies are expected to participate in the new missile production ecosystem. Companies including ICOMM Hyderabad, Bharat Forge, Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited, Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited are among the firms likely to play a key role.
These companies already have experience in defence electronics, aerospace systems, ammunition manufacturing and military equipment production. The expansion is also expected to benefit hundreds of small and medium enterprises involved in defence manufacturing, creating a wider industrial network.
The move is closely linked with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to increase domestic production and reduce reliance on imported military equipment. India has traditionally depended on foreign suppliers for several critical defence systems. The government has been pushing domestic manufacturing to create a self-reliant defence ecosystem.
By involving private companies in missile production, India aims to improve technology development, encourage innovation and strengthen its position as a defence exporter. The policy could also attract greater investment into defence research, manufacturing infrastructure and advanced engineering capabilities.
Modern conflicts around the world have shown the importance of maintaining large stocks of precision-guided weapons. Recent wars have highlighted how quickly missiles, drones and other advanced weapons can be consumed during prolonged military operations.
For India, maintaining sufficient missile inventories has become increasingly important due to security challenges along its borders with China and Pakistan. A larger manufacturing base could help India respond faster to emerging security requirements and reduce delays in defence procurement.
The latest policy signals a broader shift in India’s defence manufacturing approach. Private companies have already expanded into drones, ammunition, aerospace components and electronic warfare systems. Missile manufacturing represents another major step in their growing defence role.
The government’s long-term objective is to create a strong military industrial ecosystem capable of supporting domestic requirements as well as defence exports. However, the success of the initiative will depend on factors such as production capacity, government orders, technology absorption and maintaining strict security standards.
Opening sensitive defence technology to private companies also brings challenges related to cybersecurity and protection of classified information. The government will need to ensure strict monitoring systems, confidentiality protocols and security compliance before allowing companies to handle advanced missile technologies. Only firms meeting technical and security requirements are expected to receive production opportunities.
As private firms enter missile manufacturing, India could witness a major expansion in domestic defence production capacity. The move represents a major transformation in India’s defence sector, shifting from a limited government-led production model towards a broader industry-driven ecosystem. India’s missile manufacturing landscape is now entering a new phase where private companies could play a decisive role in strengthening the country’s military capabilities.
