India’s new CDS Gen NS Raja Subramani has outlined an ambitious vision for military modernisation, innovation and integrated theatre commands as he formally takes charge of the country’s armed forces.

New Delhi: Gen NS Raja Subramani officially assumed charge as India’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on Sunday, succeeding Gen Anil Chauhan, who completed his tenure as the country’s top military commander a day earlier.

With his appointment, Gen Subramani is expected to lead key reforms aimed at strengthening coordination among the Army, Navy and Air Force while advancing India’s long-pending integrated theatre commands plan.

Focus on Modernisation and Innovation

Soon after taking charge, Gen Subramani outlined his vision for a technologically advanced and future-ready military force. He stressed that innovation in both thought and action would play a crucial role in strengthening the operational capabilities of the armed forces.

The new CDS also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the military, industry, academic institutions, startups and the research ecosystem in driving defence modernisation.

According to him, stronger partnerships across sectors will help India build a more capable and resilient military structure capable of addressing evolving security challenges.

Commitment to National Security

Gen Subramani reaffirmed the armed forces’ commitment to protecting India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He assured citizens that the military would continue to serve the nation with dedication, professionalism and courage.

The CDS also paid tribute to soldiers and military personnel, stating that the welfare and training of service members would remain among his top priorities. He further acknowledged the contribution of veterans and Veer Naaris, promising continued focus on their welfare and support systems.

Tribute to Predecessors

During his address, Gen Subramani expressed gratitude to former CDS leaders, including late General Bipin Rawat and Gen Anil Chauhan, for laying a strong foundation for the office of the CDS.

The Chief of Defence Staff position was created to improve jointness among the three armed services and streamline military decision-making.

Experienced Military Leader

Widely regarded as an expert on Pakistan and China-related military affairs, Gen Subramani earlier served as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat.

Before this appointment, he also held the post of Vice Chief of Army Staff and served in several operational, command and instructional roles during a military career spanning over four decades.

One of his key responsibilities as CDS will be to push forward the implementation of integrated theatre commands to improve coordination and joint operations among India’s armed forces.
