New Delhi: The 12th International Day of Yoga was observed across the globe on Sunday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the main national celebration from Red Road. The annual event witnessed large-scale participation from people across different age groups, reaffirming yoga's growing influence as a global movement for health and well-being.

PM Modi Leads National Celebration

Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined yoga enthusiasts and participants in marking International Yoga Day, continuing a tradition he has followed since the global observance was formally recognised. Over the years, the Prime Minister has led celebrations from several cities across India, helping strengthen awareness about yoga's benefits and encouraging wider participation.

Theme Focuses On Healthy Ageing

The theme for International Yoga Day 2026, "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," places emphasis on maintaining physical fitness, mental balance and emotional resilience throughout life. The theme highlights how regular yoga practice can contribute to healthier lifestyles and support active ageing in an increasingly fast-paced world.

Health experts and yoga practitioners have long advocated yoga as a holistic approach to wellness, combining physical postures, breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques.

Global Participation Reaches New Heights

This year's celebrations are being held at nearly 2,500 locations worldwide. More than 210 Indian missions and diplomatic posts are participating in the observance, showcasing yoga's expanding international appeal.

Events have been organised across continents, bringing together communities, institutions and wellness enthusiasts in a shared effort to promote healthier living and collective well-being.

A Global Movement Since 2015

International Yoga Day has been observed annually since the United Nations General Assembly adopted India's proposal to mark June 21 as the global day dedicated to yoga. Since then, participation has steadily grown, transforming the event into one of the world's largest wellness initiatives.

As celebrations continue around the globe, the day once again highlights yoga's role in fostering harmony, health and a balanced way of life.
