Political activity has intensified once again regarding the Congress party’s prime ministerial candidate. A statement by Congress MP Imran Masood from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has fueled political speculation.
Congress PM Face Under Question After MP’s Statement
New Delhi: For a long time, it has been widely believed within the Indian National Congress that former party president Rahul Gandhi is the natural contender for the Prime Minister's post. Several senior party leaders and alliance partners have also, from time to time, projected Rahul Gandhi as the main face of the opposition. However, a recent statement has cast doubt on this perception.
Congress MP Imran Masood from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has hinted in a statement that the Congress party's thinking regarding its prime ministerial candidate might be changing. His statement has sparked new speculation in political circles.
The controversy began when the BJP alleged that Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra speaks out on international issues like Gaza, but remains silent on the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Responding to this accusation, Imran Masood said,
“Make Priyanka Gandhi the Prime Minister first, then see how she responds, just like Indira Gandhi.”
This statement is considered very significant in political circles, as it indicates that the possibility of seeing Priyanka Gandhi in a top leadership role within the Congress cannot be ruled out.
When Imran Masood was asked about Rahul Gandhi's role if Priyanka Gandhi becomes Prime Minister, he said that Rahul and Priyanka should not be seen separately.
He said, “Rahul and Priyanka are the grandchildren of Indira Gandhi. They are like two eyes of the same face. Don't see them separately.”
This statement makes it clear that within the Congress, both leaders are considered complementary to each other, not rivals.
The backdrop to this entire controversy is the recent events in Bangladesh. The situation there remains tense after the death of Sharif Usman Hadi, one of the prominent faces of the student movement. Meanwhile, the murder of a Hindu youth has also raised international concerns.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern over the incidents of violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh. Prohibitory orders have also been imposed in some areas along the India-Bangladesh border to maintain law and order.
Imran Masood's statement has made it clear that the Congress party may now be considering a strategy of presenting collective leadership rather than relying on a single face. However, the party has not officially announced any change regarding its prime ministerial candidate.
Currently, this statement has become the subject of political debate and speculation, and all eyes will be on the Congress party's strategy in the coming days.
