Congress leader Jairam Ramesh backs Pawan Khera
New Delhi: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday voiced strong support for party colleague Pawan Khera following an adverse ruling by the Gauhati High Court. He said the party remains united and is confident of challenging the verdict in the Supreme Court of India.
In a statement shared on X, Ramesh said the Congress stands firmly with Khera and believes justice will ultimately prevail, despite what he described as efforts marked by pressure and intimidation.

The development comes after the High Court rejected Khera’s plea for anticipatory bail in a case linked to his remarks about Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife. The decision has added to the legal challenges facing the senior Congress leader.
The case stems from allegations made by Khera during a press conference, where he claimed that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma possessed multiple passports and undisclosed foreign assets. These claims sparked a political controversy and led to a criminal complaint.
Following the complaint, Sharma approached the police, citing charges such as defamation, cheating, forgery, and intentional insult. The matter has since evolved into a multi-layered legal dispute.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had issued an interim order pausing transit anticipatory bail but allowed Khera to seek relief from the appropriate court in Assam. After subsequent legal moves, including an unsuccessful attempt to overturn the stay, Khera approached the Gauhati High Court, which ultimately rejected his plea.
With the latest setback, the Congress is now preparing to move the Supreme Court, expressing confidence that the final outcome will be in its favour.
