New Delhi: Delhi Police have registered an FIR against Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and others over their alleged unauthorised entry into the Jantar Mantar protest area, according to a report. The case reportedly includes provisions related to an alleged breach of a peace bond signed by the leaders following their detention over the weekend.
The development comes amid restrictions on demonstrations at Jantar Mantar and growing protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
According to the report, Das, Ranka and other CJP members entered the heavily barricaded area on Tuesday and raised slogans demanding Kumar’s resignation. Police detained several members for allegedly violating prohibitory orders. The outfit said around 11 of its members had been detained. A police officer said they were taken to Jaffarpur Kalan Police Station in Delhi’s Dwarka district.
Security was subsequently strengthened after CJP workers gathered outside the station. The latest action follows the detention of CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, Das and Ranka on Saturday. They were released the following day after reportedly agreeing not to breach the peace for one year.
Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar issued a standing order on October 11 identifying Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground as alternative venues for protests and demonstrations. CJP said Jantar Mantar was denotified as a designated protest site on October 12, the same day its representatives approached Parliament Street Police Station seeking permission for a peaceful demonstration.
Dipke described the group's action as an attempt to reclaim Jantar Mantar, arguing that the site's denotification would not stop its agitation. The party has criticised the move, saying that shifting demonstrations away from the national capital's political centre could reduce the visibility of public dissent. The dispute unfolds amid heightened security in New Delhi over calls for Kumar’s resignation. The allegations against the CJP leaders remain subject to the legal process.
