Srinagar: More than 12.89 lakh farmers in Jammu and Kashmir have been brought under crop insurance schemes, with compensation worth Rs 221.71 crore released against settled claims, the government informed the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
The government stated that the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and the Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme are currently being implemented across all 20 districts of the Union Territory.
According to the data presented in the Assembly, around 13.985 lakh farmer families are eligible to benefit from these insurance schemes. The schemes are available to eligible farmers based on government guidelines and prescribed criteria.
Between 2017–18 and 2025–26, a total of 6.86 lakh hectares of agricultural land was covered under crop insurance schemes. During this period, 3,72,134 claims were settled, and farmers received cumulative compensation of Rs 221.71 crore.
The government highlighted that the highest participation of farmers was recorded during the Kharif 2025–26 season.
During this period, 2,01,480 farmers from all 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir were covered under the crop insurance schemes. Around 93,680 claims were settled, with compensation of Rs 54.80 crore distributed among beneficiaries.
The Agriculture Production Minister informed the Assembly that PMFBY coverage, which was earlier available only in selected districts, has now been expanded across Jammu and Kashmir.
The information was provided in response to questions raised by MLAs Farooq Ahmed Shah, Irfan Hafiz Lone and Ghulam Mohi Ud Din Mir.
The government said the expansion of crop insurance schemes aims to provide financial protection to farmers against crop losses caused by natural calamities and other risks.
