Kupwara: Security forces uncovered an old hideout in Jammu and Kashmir’s Nagdanar forest during an intelligence-led search on Wednesday. The recovery of an AK-47, grenades, magazines, a silencer and more than 1,100 rounds has put renewed focus on security operations in the Handwara area.
Handwara Police, working jointly with the 21 Rashtriya Rifles and 92 Battalion CRPF, carried out a search operation in the Nagdanar forest following specific intelligence inputs. During the operation, the team located an old hideout concealed inside the forest. Officials said the hideout was subsequently dismantled as part of the security operation.
The recovery has added to the security focus in the region, particularly on the possibility that abandoned weapon caches could still contain arms and ammunition linked to earlier militant activity.
According to officials, the search resulted in the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, three grenades and eight AK magazines. The security team also recovered 857 AK rounds, 192 PIKA rounds and 83 pistol rounds. A silencer was also found at the site along with other material described by officials as incriminating.
The scale and variety of the recovery have made the operation significant, with investigators now looking into how the weapons were stored and whether the hideout has any connection with other networks or past activities in the region.
Following the recovery, Handwara Police registered a case under FIR No. 252/2026 at Police Station Handwara under relevant legal provisions. Investigators are now examining the source and history of the recovered weapons and ammunition. Authorities are also expected to look into whether the abandoned hideout was connected to any individuals or groups operating in the area.
The investigation could provide further clues about when the hideout was created, who may have used it and how long the weapons had remained concealed. The discovery comes amid intensified intelligence-based searches and security operations across sensitive areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Forest areas can provide natural cover and difficult terrain, making abandoned hideouts an important focus during searches based on intelligence inputs. Recoveries of weapons from such locations can also prompt agencies to examine whether additional caches or related locations exist nearby. For residents, such operations underline the continued security focus in areas where authorities remain alert to the possibility of concealed arms and ammunition.
The immediate focus is on the investigation into the recovered weapons and ammunition. Security agencies will seek to establish their origin, determine when the hideout was last used and identify any possible links connected to the cache. Further searches in the surrounding forest area cannot be ruled out if investigators receive additional intelligence during the probe.
The Handwara operation also highlights the continuing role of coordinated searches involving local police, the Army and paramilitary forces in tracking down concealed arms caches across Jammu and Kashmir.
