Srinagar: Two rusted hand grenades were found by locals in a forested area near the Kishanganga River in Chontiwari village of Gurez’s Bagtore area in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district. The discovery was reported to police, following which a team from Police Post Izmarg reached the location and took cognisance of the matter.
The recovery has put the spotlight on Gurez, a strategically important border region close to the Line of Control. While the objects were found in a rusted condition, their exact nature, origin and operational status are yet to be established.
The two objects were reportedly spotted by local residents in an area where forested terrain meets the banks of the Kishanganga River. The location falls within the Bagtore sector of Gurez and is close to Chontiwari village.
After noticing the suspicious objects, the locals informed the nearby police authorities rather than attempting to move them. A police team from Police Post Izmarg subsequently reached the site and initiated the required security response.
The discovery has raised questions about how the grenades came to be located in the area and how long they may have remained there. No official conclusion about their origin has been made so far.
The grenades were reportedly found in a rusted state. Prolonged exposure to moisture, soil and changing weather conditions can cause visible corrosion on old explosive material, but the appearance of an object alone does not establish whether it remains dangerous or operational.
Authorities will need to determine the exact type and condition of the recovered objects through appropriate technical assessment. Their origin and possible connection with any earlier security activity also remain to be established.
The recovery therefore remains an issue of security assessment rather than evidence of a fresh militant incident.
The immediate response began after local residents informed the police about the recovery. Personnel from Police Post Izmarg reached the location and took control of the situation.
Security agencies are expected to follow established safety and disposal protocols while dealing with suspected explosive material. Further assessment will determine the appropriate course of action.
Officials have not established any link between the recovered grenades and a recent militant operation or infiltration attempt.
No injuries or casualties have been reported in connection with the recovery so far. The incident also highlights the importance of local awareness in remote and sensitive areas.
The decision by residents to inform authorities after spotting the suspicious objects allowed trained personnel to respond rather than leaving civilians to handle potentially hazardous material. Any further information about the condition or disposal of the objects is expected to come from the authorities after their assessment.
Gurez is located in Bandipora district and is strategically significant because of its proximity to the Line of Control. The Kishanganga River runs through the valley and forms an important geographical feature of the region.
The mountainous terrain, forests and border location make the Gurez sector particularly important from a security perspective. Security forces maintain surveillance in the region because of its proximity to the LoC and its historical relevance to border security and infiltration monitoring.
This is why the discovery of suspected explosive material, even when heavily rusted, receives immediate attention from police and security agencies.
The discovery began with local residents noticing the suspicious objects near the river. Instead of approaching the objects further or attempting to move them, they alerted the authorities.
For communities living in remote border areas, such awareness can play an important role in preventing accidental contact with old ammunition or unexploded material that may remain hidden in forests, riverbanks or other difficult-to-access locations. The incident has therefore also highlighted the role of residents in quickly reporting unusual or potentially dangerous objects.
The next step will be technical assessment of the recovered objects to establish their exact nature, condition and possible origin. Authorities may also examine the surrounding area as part of the security response. Further details are expected once the assessment is completed and officials determine the appropriate disposal or neutralisation procedure.
For now, no casualties have been reported and there is no confirmed indication that the recovery is connected to any fresh militant incident. The discovery nevertheless places the focus back on the security sensitivity of the Gurez sector and the continuing need for vigilance in remote areas close to the Line of Control.
