Family bids emotional farewell
Srinagar: A police constable in Shopian died on Tuesday after sustaining serious injuries in an accidental firing incident while on duty. Officials confirmed that the constable had been battling critical injuries for two days before passing away.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred on Saturday when a service weapon carried by another policeman allegedly discharged unintentionally. The bullet struck the constable on the right side of his abdomen, leaving him critically injured at the scene.

The injured constable, a 36-year-old resident of Noorpora in Shopian, was immediately rushed for medical attention.
He was first taken to a nearby Army hospital for emergency care. Given the severity of his condition, he was later referred to SKIMS Soura, one of the region’s premier medical facilities.
At SKIMS, he was admitted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU), where doctors made continuous efforts to stabilise his condition. Despite intensive treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the accidental discharge. Officials stated that standard procedures are being followed to assess whether there was any lapse in handling the weapon.

The incident has raised concerns about firearm safety protocols during active duty, particularly in sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir.
While accidental discharges are relatively rare, such incidents underline the importance of strict adherence to safety guidelines. Police officials are expected to review existing procedures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
