Srinagar: Amidst snowfall in the valley, the number of tourists is increasing ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations. In view of this, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a safe environment for tourists. Continuous search operations are being conducted in Srinagar city and other sensitive areas.
To further strengthen security and counter any potential terrorist threats, the police are conducting area domination and anti-sabotage operations at various locations. In this connection, security forces conducted anti-sabotage operations around important locations in Srinagar city on Tuesday as well.
A Srinagar police officer said that area security and anti-sabotage (AST) operations were conducted in collaboration with the CRPF around key important locations and sensitive areas in the North Zone of Srinagar.
According to police sources, teams were deployed at major intersections and markets where they checked vehicles, verified documents, and questioned drivers. In addition, security forces also searched shops and suspicious buildings.
Special sniffer dog squads accompanied the personnel.
He said that the objective of this joint security exercise is to strengthen the overall security grid, enhance operational preparedness, and ensure the safety of critical infrastructure as well as the general public.
The officer said that the areas identified during the operation were thoroughly checked and sanitized. A comprehensive review of the existing security arrangements was also conducted. Such joint security exercises will continue periodically as part of proactive measures to deter potential threats and enhance public confidence.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police conducted operations in Maharaja Bazaar and Amira Kadal in Srinagar. These areas are near Bakshi Stadium, which is the main venue for Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations in the valley.
Similar operations were also conducted in Lal Chowk and Ghanta Ghar, located in the heart of Srinagar, and in Nishat (near the Nishat Mughal Garden) on the outskirts of Srinagar, areas that are usually crowded with tourists.
An official said that with the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays, which are expected to see an increase in tourist numbers, such operations will continue.
Major search operation also conducted in Pahalgam
A major search operation was also conducted on Tuesday in the Salia area of Anantnag district in South Kashmir by personnel of the police's Special Operations Group (SOG) along with other security agencies. According to sources, this area is close to the famous tourist destination of Pahalgam. The search operation was launched based on specific intelligence. However, the operation concluded without any significant findings. Security forces have not yet formally confirmed this operation.
