Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal appointed new president of NCLT
New Delhi: The Central Government has approved the appointment of Justice (Retd.) Anupinder Singh Grewal, former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as the new President of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
The decision was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) based on a proposal from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, according to an official notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
As per the notification, Justice Grewal will hold the post for a period of five years from the date he assumes charge, or until he reaches the age of 67 years, whichever is earlier. He will receive a fixed salary as per the prescribed pay scale.
He succeeds Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar, who served as NCLT President from November 1, 2021, and recently completed his tenure.
The NCLT is an important judicial body in India that handles corporate disputes, matters under the Companies Act, and insolvency cases under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
Born on March 10, 1964, in Ludhiana, Punjab, Justice Grewal completed his early education at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, earning a B.A. (Honours) in History in 1985 and an M.A. in History in 1987. He later obtained his law degree (LL.B.) from the University of Delhi in 1992.
He began his legal career in 1992 at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Over the years, he held several important roles with the Punjab government, including Assistant Advocate General, Deputy Advocate General, Senior Deputy Advocate General, and Additional Advocate General. He also served as Senior Panel Counsel for the Central Government in 2009.
Justice Grewal was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in September 2014. He was later transferred to the Rajasthan High Court in December 2014 and made a permanent judge in May 2016. He subsequently returned to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in October 2016.
