Justice PS Narasimha into Supreme Court Collegium

Justice Narasimha will be part of the five member Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant. Collegium, consists of senior most judges, is an extra- constitutional body responsible for the appointment and transfer of judges to the Supreme Court and various High Courts of India.

New Delhi: Following the retirement of Justice J K Maheshwari on Sunday, Justice PS Narasimha has been promoted to the Supreme Court Collegium.

Justice Narasimha will be part of the five member Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant. Collegium, consists of senior most judges, is an extra- constitutional body responsible for the appointment and transfer of judges to the Supreme Court and various High Courts of India.

The Collegium ensures judicial independence and acts as a screening body to safeguard the judiciary from executive interference by consolidating judicial decision making into the hands of senior judges.

Justice Narasimha is Supreme Court Chief Justice in waiting and expected to take over from Justice Nagarathna in October 2027. Justice Narasimha would continue as Chief Justice of India till his retirement in May 2028.

Born and brought in Hyderabad, Justice Narasimha's family belonged to legal profession. His father, P Kodanda Ramaiah, was the judge of Andhra Pradesh High Court and legal writer.
