Kargil Vijay Diwas 2026: President Murmu, PM Modi Pay Tribute To Operation Vijay Heroes

New Delhi: India is observing the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas on Sunday, with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several senior leaders paying tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1999 Kargil War.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is commemorated every year on July 26 to mark the successful completion of Operation Vijay, through which the Indian Armed Forces recaptured strategic positions occupied by Pakistani troops and infiltrators in the Kargil sector of Ladakh.

President, PM Pay Tribute to Bravehearts

President Droupadi Murmu said the nation would always remain indebted to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in defence of the motherland. She described their courage, patriotism and commitment as an enduring inspiration for future generations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage to the Kargil heroes, saying their unwavering devotion to duty and extraordinary bravery under the most challenging conditions continue to be a source of national pride.

Tributes Across the Country

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and several other leaders joined the nation in remembering the fallen soldiers.

Rajnath Singh is on a two-day visit to Ladakh to participate in the Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass. Due to adverse weather conditions, he travelled by road after helicopter operations were affected.

Remembering Operation Vijay

The Kargil War, fought between May and July 1999, ended with India successfully regaining all key positions after nearly three months of intense fighting in the high-altitude terrain of Ladakh.

The victory remains one of the defining moments in India's military history and is remembered each year through memorial ceremonies, tributes and events honouring the courage and sacrifice of the armed forces.
