Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday flagged off the third edition of the Kashmir International Marathon in Srinagar, bringing together thousands of runners from across India and overseas for a major sporting event aimed at promoting athletic excellence, tourism and a culture of fitness in the Union Territory.

The marathon has emerged as a prominent addition to India's long-distance running calendar, attracting national and international athletes while creating opportunities for local runners to compete on a larger platform. Registration figures reported by local media indicated that 1,807 athletes had registered for the event, including 73 runners representing 12 countries. Organisers had projected overall participation of around 2,000 athletes, while another local report put the turnout at more than 2,000.

The event featured two race categories: the full marathon, covering the standard distance of 42.195 kilometres, and the half marathon, spanning 21 kilometres. The participation of runners from different regions and countries has added an international dimension to Srinagar's sporting landscape.

Rs 3.17 Crore Prize Pool Puts Kashmir Marathon in Spotlight

The third edition of the Kashmir International Marathon carries a total prize pool of Rs 3.17 crore, with the winner in the open category set to receive Rs 25 lakh. The substantial prize purse has further raised the profile of the competition, positioning it as an important platform for competitive long-distance running.

A dedicated prize category for athletes from Jammu and Kashmir has also been introduced to encourage regional participation and strengthen the local athletics ecosystem. The initiative is intended to give runners from the Union Territory greater incentives to pursue long-distance running and test their capabilities against experienced national and international competitors.

The focus on local athletes is particularly significant for grassroots sports development. Competitive exposure, professional training and access to high-profile sporting events can help emerging runners improve their endurance, race strategy and performance standards.

Dal Lake, Boulevard Road Add Scenic Appeal to Race Route

The marathon route takes runners through some of Srinagar's most recognisable locations, including stretches along Dal Lake, Boulevard Road and Nishat Garden. Lal Chowk is also among the prominent areas featured along the race route, bringing the competition into the heart of the city.

The combination of endurance sport and Kashmir's distinctive natural landscape gives the event considerable potential to attract visitors, sports enthusiasts and fitness communities. The scenic route also provides an opportunity to showcase Srinagar beyond its conventional tourism attractions, highlighting its suitability for hosting large-scale sporting competitions.

Sports tourism has increasingly become an important avenue for destinations seeking to diversify visitor experiences. Events such as the Kashmir Marathon can generate visibility for local attractions, support hospitality and tourism-related businesses, and encourage visitors to explore the region through organised sporting activities.

Organisers aim to establish the marathon as a regular fixture on India's sporting calendar, creating a recurring platform for competitive athletics and international participation.

Focus on Fitness, Sports Tourism and Local Talent

Beyond the competition itself, the Kashmir International Marathon seeks to encourage physical fitness, promote active lifestyles and expand public engagement with endurance sports. Its growing profile could help inspire more young people to take up running while strengthening awareness of structured training, stamina building and long-term athletic development.

The participation of international athletes also creates opportunities for local runners to benchmark their performance against competitors with different training backgrounds and racing experience. Such exposure, supported by coaching infrastructure and regular competitions, could help athletes from Jammu and Kashmir improve their prospects at national and international events.

The third edition underscores the broader objective of developing a sustainable sporting culture across the Union Territory. Continued investment in athletics, grassroots participation and professionally organised competitions will be important to translating the marathon's visibility into lasting sporting outcomes.

Abdullah, who participated in the first two editions of the event, did not compete as a runner this year and instead flagged off the marathon in Srinagar.

With its substantial prize pool, international participation and scenic urban route, Kashmir Marathon 3.0 has reinforced Srinagar's ambitions to emerge as a destination for major sporting events while linking athletics with tourism promotion and regional talent development.
