Opposition leaders visited Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital.
New Delhi: On Wednesday, delegation of Opposition leaders visited Sonam Wangchuk climate activist and education reformer at Medanta Hospital and urged him to call off his indefinite fast while expressing their solidarity with his movement to bring about changes in the fields of education and environment.
The visit was led by a few young Members of Parliament from different Opposition parties together with Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh. Members of Parliament from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) also attended the meeting.
The MPs presented a letter to Wangchuk which conveyed their support to his struggle and requested him to call off his fast.
The letter from the Opposition leaders commended Sonam Wangchuk for his dedication to various issues affecting the nation's youth, the environment and education.
They wrote that they had a "deep respect, admiration and appreciation" for what he was doing and that his movement was beyond any single issue.
"Your struggle transcends any single issue it is a fight for the times of our children and for the unique vision that should make our India great, wise and just," the letter read.
The MPs were of the opinion that Sonam Wangchuk's cause had struck a chord with people from all walks of life across the country and that his message had resonated with people from various backgrounds.
Opposition leaders appealed to the activist to put his health first, and called on Wangchuk to end his indefinite hunger strike.
"At this point, we humbly appeal to you to kindly end your indefinite fast, your mandate for reform in education system has been taken home by the whole country" was the wording in the letter.
The leaders also pointed out that although people across the nation are following his demands, his own wellbeing was equally important.
Opposition leaders also communicated that the country needed him as a leader and guide.
Letter also said that people across India continue to look up to him as their inspiration, and how his voice continues to be essential as the country deliberates on issues ranging from education, climate to public policy.
Hospital visit comes amid growing political support for Wangchuk's movement, with Opposition parties rallying behind his demands while urging him to safeguard his health. The meeting also reflects an effort by Opposition leaders to show solidarity with his campaign without losing sight of concerns over his prolonged fast.
