Kolkata: College security guard held in rape case; 4th arrests so far

This heinous crime was committed on the evening of 25 June in the guard room near the student union office located in the college campus.

Kolkata: Security gaurd of the South Calcutta Law College arrested by police in the case of gang rape of a student. The police has taken major action and made the fourth arrest, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Earlier, three other accused have already been arrested in this case, including a former student of the college. The court has sent all three accused to four-day police custody, while the interrogation of the new accused is underway.

This heinous crime was committed on the evening of 25 June in the guard room near the student union office located in the college campus. According to the FIR lodged by the victim, the accused forcibly took her to the guard room and tortured her physically and mentally for more than three hours. After the incident, the victim somehow got out of there and with the help of family members, lodged a complaint in the town police station.

Kolkata Police Monitoring The Case

The police have sealed the incident site, the guard room with immediate effect and forensic evidence is being collected from there. The crime branch of Kolkata Police is monitoring this case and investigation is being done from all angles, so that no accused is spared. Along with this, the college administration is also being questioned as to how such a serious security lapse happened inside an educational institution.

Questions Raised On Safety Of Girls

This case is reminiscent of the horror of the rape and murder of a girl student in R.G. Kar Medical College in August last year, which shook the entire state. Once again serious questions have been raised about the safety of girl students in educational institutions of Kolkata.

Demand For Strict Action

Student organizations and social workers have strongly condemned this incident and have demanded immediate strict action from the college administration. At the same time, the victim has been sent to the hospital for medical examination, where her counseling and health examination is going on.

Campus Security

Police officials said that more arrests are possible in the case and the justice process will be taken forward by filing a charge sheet soon. The incident has not only exposed the security arrangements of the college campus, but has also raised deep concerns about the safety of women in educational institutions.
