Officials said the exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed. An investigation has been launched to determine how the blaze started and whether safety regulations were properly followed.
Authorities are also examining allegations that the hotel may not have had adequate fire safety arrangements.
The Kolkata incident comes just days after another deadly hotel fire in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, where nine people were killed in a blaze at a hotel in Tarapith.
In that incident, several guests were trapped inside the building after smoke spread rapidly through the premises. Police later detained the hotel owner and another person as part of an investigation into possible violations of fire safety rules.
The back-to-back fire incidents in West Bengal have raised concerns over fire safety compliance in hotels and commercial establishments.
Authorities are now focusing on whether proper emergency exits, fire equipment and safety protocols were in place at the Kolkata hotel.
