New Delhi: A devastating fire at a hotel on Kolkata’s Mirza Ghalib Street claimed the lives of nine people in the early hours of Wednesday. The blaze broke out at around 2 am in a four-storey building housing the hotel, leaving several guests trapped inside.

According to officials, all nine deceased were Bangladeshi nationals who had travelled to Kolkata for medical treatment and were staying at the hotel.

Rescue teams rushed to the spot after receiving information about the fire. Several people were evacuated from the building and taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where nine victims were declared dead.

Firefighters battle blaze for nearly two hours

Fire department teams conducted rescue operations and fought the flames for nearly two hours before bringing the situation under control.

Officials said the exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed. An investigation has been launched to determine how the blaze started and whether safety regulations were properly followed.

Authorities are also examining allegations that the hotel may not have had adequate fire safety arrangements.

Bengal witnesses second major hotel fire tragedy

The Kolkata incident comes just days after another deadly hotel fire in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, where nine people were killed in a blaze at a hotel in Tarapith.

In that incident, several guests were trapped inside the building after smoke spread rapidly through the premises. Police later detained the hotel owner and another person as part of an investigation into possible violations of fire safety rules.

Safety concerns under scanner

The back-to-back fire incidents in West Bengal have raised concerns over fire safety compliance in hotels and commercial establishments.

Authorities are now focusing on whether proper emergency exits, fire equipment and safety protocols were in place at the Kolkata hotel.
