New Delhi: The central government has increased the waiting period for booking LPG cylinder refills from 21 days to 25 days, aiming to prevent hoarding and ensure equitable supply to households.
The Petroleum Ministry said the step has been taken to maintain a balanced distribution system and ensure that domestic consumers continue to receive cylinders on time.
Officials noted that in recent weeks, some consumers had been trying to book refills earlier than permitted, raising concerns about potential shortages in certain areas. Government sources emphasized that household consumers will remain the top priority in the supply chain.

Steps Taken to Boost LPG Availability
To manage rising demand and maintain stable supply, authorities have asked refineries to increase LPG production. The government is also prioritising domestic household connections over commercial consumption where required.
India has begun discussions with several countries to secure additional LPG supplies. These include Algeria, Australia, Canada and Norway, which are being considered as alternative sources to strengthen supply chains.
Officials said the objective is to ensure that the domestic market remains stable and to prevent panic buying during periods of global uncertainty.
Impact of West Asia Tensions on Energy Markets
The decision comes at a time when geopolitical tensions in West Asia have raised concerns about disruptions in global energy supplies. However, government officials said India currently has adequate fuel stocks.
Petrol and diesel prices are expected to remain stable unless global crude oil prices cross USD 130 per barrel. At present, crude oil is projected to remain around USD 100 per barrel, limiting immediate price pressures on retail fuels.
Authorities are also exploring alternative crude oil import routes beyond the Strait of Hormuz to enhance energy security.

LPG Prices See Recent Increase
Meanwhile, domestic LPG prices have recently increased in several cities. In Delhi, a 14.2 kg non-subsidised LPG cylinder now costs ₹913, compared to the earlier price of ₹853.
Prices stand at ₹912.50 in Mumbai, ₹939 in Kolkata, and ₹928.50 in Chennai. Commercial LPG cylinders used by hotels and restaurants have also become costlier. In Delhi, a 19 kg commercial cylinder now costs ₹1,883.
However, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will continue to receive a subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder for up to 12 cylinders each year, the government said.
