New Delhi: LPG distributors staged a protest at CBD Ground in East Delhi on Monday, demanding a revision of commissions, higher delivery charges and changes to policies promoting piped natural gas (PNG). Association representatives said rising operating costs and long-pending demands were putting pressure on their businesses.

LPG Distributors Demand Higher Fees

BS Sharma, national president of the LPG Distributors Association of India (LDAI), said several demands remained unresolved. The association claims that although commissions received a modest interim increase in 2022 after the previous revision in 2018, distributors still need a comprehensive review of their earnings and charges.

LDAI is seeking a Rs 75 increase in home delivery and administrative charges, along with Rs 236 for every e-KYC completed for consumers. Distributors argue that current payments do not adequately reflect their growing operational expenses.

PNG Policy Raises Concerns

Protesters also objected to restrictions affecting LPG connections in areas covered by PNG pipelines. They argued that policies encouraging piped gas could affect LPG distribution businesses and threaten distributors' livelihoods.

The association wants consumers to retain the freedom to choose their preferred cooking fuel according to their needs and financial circumstances. It has also called for a review of restrictions concerning new LPG connections.

Allegations Against Oil Companies

LDAI alleged that officials of public-sector oil marketing companies were pressuring distributors to sell non-fuel products and raising concerns over changes to indenting arrangements for 19-kg commercial cylinders linked to free-trade LPG supplies. The companies' responses to these allegations were not available.

Nationwide Strike Warning

LDAI warned that distributors could consider an indefinite nationwide strike if their demands remain unaddressed. However, the Federation of LPG Distributors of India (FLDI) and the All India LPG Distributors Federation (AILDF) have favoured dialogue and continued gas supplies.

Delhi Police had reportedly said permission for the protest had not been granted. Distributors nevertheless gathered at the venue, leaving the next course of action dependent on discussions and the authorities' response.
