Amravati: A tragic incident at a government hospital in Maharashtra has raised serious concerns over newborn safety after a fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Amravati District Women’s Hospital. Three newborn babies died in the incident, while several others were shifted for emergency treatment.
The fire reportedly broke out in the early hours of Monday after a ventilator inside the NICU suddenly caught fire. At the time of the incident, around 39 newborns were admitted to the unit.
According to preliminary information, the blaze started around 3:30 am on the third floor of the hospital. The suspected cause of the fire was a malfunction in a ventilator installed inside the NICU.
As soon as the fire was noticed, doctors, nurses and hospital staff launched a rescue operation and began evacuating the babies from the affected ward.
Despite immediate efforts, three infants could not be saved and died due to injuries sustained during the incident.
Following the fire, six other newborns were transferred to the Super Specialty Hospital for further medical care. Their condition is being monitored by doctors.
Hospital authorities and emergency teams worked to control the situation and ensure the safety of other infants admitted in the NICU.
Officials are expected to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the exact reason behind the fire. The probe will focus on the condition of medical equipment, safety arrangements in the NICU and possible negligence, if any.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over fire safety measures in hospitals, especially in sensitive areas like neonatal care units where critically ill newborns require constant monitoring and support.
