Imphal: Fresh violence has gripped Manipur’s Kamjong district after suspected militants allegedly attacked a hill village, setting at least 15 houses belonging to members of the Kuki community on fire. One Kuki civilian was killed and four others suffered bullet injuries, while frightened residents reportedly fled to nearby forest areas and an Army camp for safety.
Officials said the attack took place in Chassad village late Saturday night, with gunfire and arson leaving families displaced and raising fresh concerns about civilian security in the state.
According to officials, suspected militants attacked the village and torched several homes. The incident forced residents to leave their houses and seek refuge in safer locations. The violence reportedly continued into Sunday, when a Kuki civilian was killed and four others were injured in a gun attack. The injured were identified in reports as including village leaders. The latest incident has renewed fears among local residents as security personnel work to stabilise the affected area.
Police said a joint team comprising the Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF) and Kamjong Police had been deployed to the area to bring the situation under control. The security deployment is aimed at preventing further violence and protecting residents amid heightened tensions. Authorities are also under pressure to ensure the safety of displaced families and investigate the attacks.
Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen condemned the attack in Chassad and expressed grief over the death of the civilian. She also voiced concern for those injured and families forced to leave their homes. Kipgen described the burning of houses as an intolerable crime. She said she had instructed the district administration, state police and security forces to remain alert around the clock, protect civilian lives and property, and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.
In another incident reported from Kamjong district headquarters on Saturday night, three Tangkhul Naga civilians sustained bullet injuries when rival armed groups allegedly attacked the village. The separate incident adds to concerns over renewed violence in the district. With homes destroyed, civilians injured and families displaced, the immediate priority remains restoring security, providing assistance to affected residents and preventing further attacks.
Authorities have deployed security personnel, while the circumstances and responsibility for the reported attacks require investigation.
