Manipur Violence Flares Up Again: CM Chairs High-Level Meeting; Internet Suspended in Five Districts

Imphal: A deeply tragic incident has unfolded in the Bishnupur district of Manipur. Around 1:00 AM, suspected militants hurled a bomb at a residence in the Moirang Tronglaobi area. The attack claimed the lives of a 5-year-old boy and a 6-month-old infant girl. This incident has created an atmosphere of fear and outrage throughout the entire region.

Public Outrage and Protests

Following the incident, local residents took to the streets to stage vigorous protests. In a fit of rage, the crowd set fire to two oil tankers and a truck. Additionally, tires were burned in front of the Moirang Police Station, and a temporary police outpost was vandalized. These actions further escalated the tension in the area.

Deployment of Security Forces

To bring the situation under control, the administration took immediate action. A large contingent of security forces has been deployed across the area. The police are conducting continuous patrols to prevent the violence from spreading and to ensure the situation remains under control.

Government Meeting and Statement

Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh immediately convened a high-level meeting following the incident. During this meeting, the law and order situation was reviewed in consultation with legislators, and measures to de-escalate the situation were discussed. The chief minister stated that the government is fully committed to restoring peace and normalcy as soon as possible and that every necessary step is being taken to achieve this end.

Suspension of Internet Services

The government has taken a significant step to curb the spread of rumors and misinformation. Internet and mobile data services have been suspended for three days across five districts of Manipur: Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur. This suspension extends to broadband, VSAT, and VPN services as well.

The government asserts that it is continuously monitoring the situation and that restoring peace remains its top priority. The administration is taking every possible measure to ensure the safety and security of the public and to facilitate a return to normalcy within the state.
