New Delhi: While the Congress party performed poorly in the Bihar elections, there is some good news for it from Delhi. Of the 12 MCD seats for which by-elections are being held, nine were previously held by the BJP, while the AAP held three. Congress hadn't won any of these seats, but the MCD by-elections have come as a breath of fresh air for the Congress, which had been marginalized in the state for the past three assembly elections. The party has won the Sangam Vihar seat. Congress's Suresh Chaudhary defeated BJP candidate Shubharjeet Gautam by over 3,000 votes.

Will Sangam Vihar provide a lifeline for the Congress party in Delhi? This question has become important because Delhi was once a Congress stronghold. The late Sheila Dikshit served as Chief Minister for three consecutive terms. While a single seat victory may seem symbolic, it could also inject new life into the Congress cadre.

The main contest in this election was expected to be between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party. However, Congress has made the contest triangular this time. Congress fielded candidates on all 12 seats. A total of 51 candidates were in the fray in the MCD by-elections.

The Delhi MCD by-elections were held in Dwarka, Vinod Nagar, Sangam Vihar, Chandni Mahal, Mundka, Greater Kailash, Ashok Vihar, Shalimar Bagh, Dichaun Kala, South Puri, Naraina, and Chandni Chowk.
