New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will celebrate his 75th birthday tomorrow, 17 September. Since assuming office in 2014, Modi’s government has implemented several transformative reforms aimed at boosting India’s economy and enhancing social welfare.

Here are key landmark achievements by Modi government: 

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) launched in 2014, is a financial inclusion initiative aimed at providing universal banking access to all households in India. The scheme offers zero-balance savings accounts, RuPay debit cards, accident insurance, and more. By linking accounts with Aadhaar cards and mobile numbers, it enabled Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) for subsidies and welfare schemes.

As per the official website, over 50 crore accounts have been opened, and 13.55 lakh Bank Mitras delivering branchless banking services in the country.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), introduced in 2015 under the banner of "Housing for All," with an aim of providing affordable homes to economically weak people of urban and rural areas. Beneficiaries under this scheme, are given subsidies for construction and purchase, with a focus on women and marginalised communities.

Recent efforts under this scheme include the reconstruction after natural disasters, such as floods in Punjab, and targeted housing assistance for tribal populations.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign, launched in 2014, aimed to eliminate open defecation and improve sanitation across the country. Over 100 million toilets were built under this scheme, significantly improving rural hygiene and public health.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Introduced in 2017, Goods and Services Tax (GST) is one of India's most significant tax reforms. This reform replaced the complexity of indirect taxes with a unified tax system, enhancing transparency and promoting a common national market.

Ayushman Bharat Yojana

Ayushman Bharat scheme also called PM-JAY was launched in 2018, became the world's largest government-funded health protection scheme. The scheme offered coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family annually. This has facilitated over 7 crore free hospital admissions and also pushed India toward digital health reforms through the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, creating digital health IDs for millions of citizens.

Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Campaign

The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign, introduced in January 2015, targeted the declining child sex ratio and promoted education for girls. The scheme focuses upon three key areas: preventing gender-biased sex selection, ensuring the protection of the girl child, and promoting education by providing equal opportunities.

Make in India

This initiative aimed to boost manufacturing and attract foreign direct investment (FDI). It focused on ease of doing business and building India as a global manufacturing hub, with sectors like defense, electronics, and automobiles prioritized.

Article 370 Abrogation

In 2019, the Modi government abrogated Article 370, removing Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and integrating it more firmly with India. It was followed by bifurcation into two union territories and promises of development.

Several local political parties and groups, such as the Kashmiri Hindu organisation Panun Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir Workers Party and IkkJutt Jammu lauded the removal of Article 370 and the integration of Jammu and Kashmir.
