New Delhi: The political confrontation between the government and Opposition intensified on Wednesday after Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered a detailed debate in Parliament over the NEET paper leak controversy, student protests and allegations of police action against demonstrators. Shah said he was ready to answer every question raised by Opposition leaders and proposed a 24-hour discussion window inside the House.
The Home Minister said the debate could begin at 3 pm on Wednesday and continue until 3 pm on Thursday if the Opposition submits a formal request to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. He urged Opposition parties to allow Parliament proceedings to function and use the established parliamentary mechanism for discussion.
The offer came amid repeated disruptions in both Houses of Parliament, where Opposition parties have been demanding answers from the government over the handling of NEET-related student protests, alleged use of force by security personnel and other issues, including allegations linked to Ram Temple donation irregularities.
Speaking outside the Parliament complex, Shah said the government had no hesitation in discussing issues raised by the Opposition and was ready for a comprehensive debate under parliamentary rules and procedures. The Home Minister said he would personally remain present in the House throughout the discussion, listen to every point raised by MPs, take detailed notes and respond to all questions. He also indicated that the discussion could continue late into the night and extend until the next day if required.
He maintained that serious national issues should be addressed through structured parliamentary debates instead of repeated disruptions. He said parliamentary proceedings provide a proper platform where all sides can present their views and facts can be placed before the public. Shah also said that asking a minister to simply make a statement is not the established parliamentary method for handling major issues. According to him, detailed discussions allow members to raise questions, present arguments and seek clarification from the government.
The latest political standoff is centred around the NEET paper leak controversy and protests by students demanding transparency and accountability in the examination system. Opposition parties have accused the government of failing to adequately respond to concerns raised by students and have demanded answers from Amit Shah regarding alleged police action during demonstrations.
The Opposition has also raised allegations related to the Ram Temple donation controversy and sought discussions on multiple issues during the Monsoon Session. The government, however, has rejected accusations of avoiding debate and has maintained that every issue can be discussed through parliamentary procedures.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had earlier said that the government was ready for a discussion on the NEET protest issue and that Amit Shah would respond to questions raised by Opposition members during the debate.
The BJP-led NDA government has maintained that it is prepared to discuss every issue raised by the Opposition and has nothing to hide. Amit Shah said the proposed debate would allow all sides to present their views and help the public understand the complete facts behind the controversy.
He said the Opposition now has to decide whether it wants a meaningful discussion inside Parliament or continued disruption of proceedings. BJP leaders accused the Opposition of blocking Parliament despite the government agreeing to a debate. Rajya Sabha Leader of the House JP Nadda also criticised the allegations made by Opposition leaders and said the government was ready to respond through proper parliamentary channels.
Soon after Amit Shah announced his offer, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi rejected the proposal and continued his attack on the government over the student protest issue. Gandhi questioned the circumstances surrounding the alleged action against protesting students and demanded accountability from those responsible for the police response. He remarked that when a man lacked the courage to speak the truth, his silence often spoke for him. Amit Shah’s silence was his confession, he noted.
The Congress leader sought clarity on who authorised the alleged use of force against students and accused the Home Minister of avoiding direct answers on the matter. The Opposition has maintained that a parliamentary discussion alone is not enough and that responsibility must be fixed over the handling of student demonstrations.
Earlier, Opposition MPs staged demonstrations outside Parliament and raised slogans demanding answers from Amit Shah. The protests focused mainly on alleged police excesses during student demonstrations linked to the NEET controversy.
Opposition leaders have described their demands as critical issues requiring immediate discussion, while the government has argued that sensitive matters must be addressed according to parliamentary rules.
The ongoing political confrontation has resulted in repeated disruptions in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, affecting normal legislative business during the Monsoon Session.
The focus now remains on whether the Opposition accepts Amit Shah’s offer and participates in the proposed debate.
