Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has dismissed viral social media messages claiming that schools in Mumbai will remain closed and private offices have been advised to implement work-from-home arrangements on Wednesday, calling the circulating information "completely false."
The civic body issued the clarification after misleading messages began circulating online following heavy rainfall that had disrupted normal life in Mumbai earlier this week.
In a statement shared on X, the BMC said it has not issued any notification announcing a fresh holiday for schools or directing private companies to allow employees to work from home.
The civic body urged citizens not to rely on unverified social media posts and advised them to refer only to official communication for weather-related announcements and civic updates.
It also appealed to residents to follow its official social media handles or contact the civic helpline for authentic information.
The clarification comes a day after the BMC had declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Tuesday due to heavy rainfall that affected transportation and daily life across the city over the previous two days.
Several low-lying areas experienced waterlogging, while suburban train services and road traffic were disrupted because of continuous downpours.
Weather conditions improved on Tuesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to downgrade Mumbai's weather alert from orange to yellow.
With rainfall easing, suburban railway services resumed normal operations and civic authorities reported an improvement in overall conditions.
As of now, the BMC has not announced any city-wide holiday for Wednesday.
While Mumbai schools are functioning as usual, neighbouring Palghar district has declared a holiday for schools and colleges due to prevailing weather conditions in the region.
Authorities have advised residents to continue monitoring official weather advisories as the monsoon remains active across parts of Maharashtra.
