Mumbai: Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to begin international flight operations from July 15, marking a significant milestone for India's newest major aviation hub. Alongside passenger services, the airport is also preparing to launch international cargo operations, further strengthening its role in regional and global connectivity.
The airport, developed by the Adani Group, began domestic commercial operations in December last year and has since witnessed steady growth in passenger traffic.
According to airport officials, international freighter operations are expected to start first, with nearly 18 cargo flights planned every week during the initial phase. Passenger services are also likely to commence on the same date, subject to final regulatory clearances.
Officials indicated that both IndiGo and Air India Express are preparing to operate international routes from the Navi Mumbai facility, making them among the first carriers to launch overseas services from the airport.
Authorities have been conducting readiness reviews and operational assessments ahead of the launch. Customs-related approvals and trial runs for cargo and courier systems are also nearing completion.
Airport officials expect the final formalities to be completed in the coming weeks, paving the way for the airport's international debut.
Since opening for domestic operations on December 25 last year, the airport has handled approximately 20,000 passengers daily and around 150 arrivals and departures each day.
The growth trajectory has exceeded expectations, driven largely by strong airline commitments and increasing passenger demand. Airport authorities now expect daily passenger traffic to reach 50,000 by the end of the year.
At the same time, daily air traffic movements are projected to rise to nearly 380, reflecting the airport's expanding operational footprint.
Adding to its achievements, Navi Mumbai International Airport was recently named among the Prix Versailles World's Most Beautiful Airports 2026. The recognition placed it alongside leading international airports from countries including Germany, China, Cambodia and the United States.
While some international expansion plans have been affected by ongoing developments in the Gulf region, airport officials remain optimistic about future growth. Several airlines have reportedly shown interest in operating long-haul services, highlighting the airport's potential to become a major gateway for international travel and trade.
