Pokhara: A large group of Nepali youths, former Gorkha soldiers and their families have taken to the streets in Nepal’s Pokhara city, demanding the resumption of recruitment for the Indian Army’s Agnipath scheme.
The protesters said joining the Indian Army remains a matter of pride and opportunity for Nepali youth, and urged the Nepal government to allow citizens to participate in the Agniveer recruitment process.
The recruitment of Gorkha soldiers into the Indian Army has been a historic link between India and Nepal for decades. However, the process was paused after 2019 and later remained suspended following India’s introduction of the Agnipath scheme in 2022.
Under the Agnipath system, soldiers recruited as Agniveers serve for four years, after which up to 25 per cent may be selected for permanent service. The remaining personnel receive a financial package after completing their tenure.
Protesters argued that limited employment opportunities in Nepal are forcing many young people to look for work abroad, particularly in Gulf countries.
They said serving in the Indian Army offers not only employment but also a connection with the long-standing Gorkha military tradition.
The rally in Pokhara was organised by the Indian Ex-Servicemen Gorkha Brigade Nepal and included former soldiers, their families and aspiring recruits.
The demonstrators marched from Pokhara Stadium to the District Administration Office and submitted a memorandum demanding the immediate reopening of Agniveer recruitment for Nepali citizens.
They also called for protecting the rights and dignity of former soldiers’ organisations working for the welfare of ex-servicemen.
The protest comes ahead of Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth’s scheduled visit to Nepal, adding significance to the ongoing debate over Gorkha recruitment and the future of the historic military partnership.
