Nirav’s brother Nehal Modi arrested in America; Action on CBI-ED extradition request

New Delhi: Fugitive businessman Nirav Modi's brother Nehal Modi has been arrested in the US. He has been arrested after the extradition request of CBI and ED.

According to the information given by the United States Department of Justice, fugitive economic offender Nirav Modi's brother was arrested by US authorities on July 4.

This arrest took place after a joint extradition request made by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Extradition proceedings are being done in two cases

According to the complaint filed by the US prosecution, extradition proceedings are being done in two cases - one case of money laundering under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002 and the other of criminal conspiracy under Section 120-B and 201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Nehal Modi is wanted in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. It is one of the biggest banking scams in the history of the country. In the investigation conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Nehal Modi was found to be a key person working to legalize the criminal proceeds of Nirav Modi, who is also facing extradition from Britain.

Nehal is accused of helping to hide and transfer huge amounts of illegal money through a network of shell companies and foreign transactions in violation of Indian laws. The next hearing date for extradition proceedings has been set as 17 July 2025. He can apply for bail during this time, which the US prosecution has said will be opposed.
