New Delhi: The no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will be taken up for discussion on March 9, with voting scheduled after the debate, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced.

The second phase of Parliament’s Budget Session will run from March 9 to April 2. Rijiju indicated that several significant bills, including a key legislation, are expected to be introduced during this period, making the session “very important.”

Rijiju’s Warning to the Opposition

Targeting opposition parties, Rijiju cautioned that continued disruptions-similar to those witnessed in the first phase of the session-could backfire on them.

He stated that if the opposition does not allow the House to function smoothly, the government may resort to the guillotine procedure, a parliamentary mechanism that enables pending financial business to be passed without further debate.

Rijiju also highlighted apparent cracks within opposition ranks, noting that the All India Trinamool Congress has not signed the no-confidence motion. According to him, several smaller parties are not in favor of stalling proceedings and prefer to raise constituency issues, particularly ahead of upcoming assembly elections.

Background

The development comes amid heightened political tensions after the opposition accused Om Birla of acting in a “partisan manner.” Reports suggest he offered to step aside from presiding over the House shortly after the motion seeking his removal was submitted.

The debate on March 9 is expected to be closely watched, as it could set the tone for the remainder of the Budget Session.
