New Delhi: A Parliamentary Standing Committee has issued clear instructions to the Election Commission (EC), directing that during the process of revising the voter list, the name of no genuine voter should be deleted inadvertently. Furthermore, the committee emphasized that the public should not face any inconvenience during this process, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

SIR—standing for Special Intensive Revision—is the process through which the voter list is updated. This involves adding the names of new voters while removing erroneous or duplicate entries. This process has already been completed in several states and is set to commence shortly in the remaining ones.

The Committee's Primary Concern

The committee stated that this entire process must be fair, transparent, and inclusive. Particular attention must be paid to the elderly, persons with disabilities, the economically weaker sections, and migrant populations to ensure that their names are not removed from the list for any reason.

Escalating Political Controversy

In certain states—most notably West Bengal—political parties have alleged that the names of numerous genuine voters have been removed from the voter lists. Consequently, questions are being raised regarding the integrity of this process, and demands for greater transparency have intensified.

The Status of the Data

In West Bengal, the names of over 6 million voters are currently under scrutiny due to discrepancies detected in their data. Following the verification process, names that are validated as genuine will be reinstated in the list. Meanwhile, the updated voter list for Uttar Pradesh is expected to be released in April.

Emphasis on Oversight and Security

The committee has directed the Election Commission to maintain strict oversight throughout this entire process. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are mandated to conduct door-to-door verifications, and all requisite documents are to be uploaded to the ECINET portal. Additionally, specific instructions have been issued to ensure the utmost care regarding data security and confidentiality during this period.

Efforts to Boost Public Trust

The committee believes that if this process is implemented correctly and effectively, it will further strengthen public confidence in the electoral system. This will ensure that every eligible citizen is able to exercise their right to vote.

Overall, this directive marks a significant step towards making the electoral process more transparent and credible. It now remains to be seen how effectively the Election Commission implements these recommendations.
