New Delhi: Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian awards of the country, nominations and recommendations for can be made till 31 July, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

These awards are announced every year on Republic Day. Nominations and recommendations for Padma Awards can be made online on the National Awards Portal.

Padma Started In 1954

The Padma Awards include Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri and were started in the year 1954. Padma Awards are given for distinguished and exceptional achievements in all fields such as art, literature and education, sports, medicine, social service, science and engineering, public work, civil service, business and industry etc.

All persons are eligible for these awards without discrimination of caste, occupation, position or gender. Except doctors and scientists, other government servants including those working in public sector undertakings are not eligible for Padma Awards.

121 Personalities Will Honoured

Under these, a maximum of 121 personalities are honoured for their outstanding work. Government servants working in public sector undertakings including other government, except doctors and scientists, are not eligible for this award for extraordinary achievements in civil service, business and industry.

Women, weaker sections, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, disabled persons and those who have selfless service for the society can also be contenders for the award. After the list is prepared from all over the country, a committee working with the Home Ministry gets the consent of the Home Minister and the Prime Minister before taking a final decision in this regard.

Government's Priority

For the last 10-11 years, the government has given priority to those working on the ground for this award. In these years, those who do farming in new ways, those who serve selflessly, those who promote indigenous health systems, folk singers, those who help in keeping old arts alive and those who work in the environment have been put forward. Doctors, artists, intellectuals and social workers have also been receiving awards in this list.

Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, given for exceptional and distinguished service.

Padma Bhushan, It's the third-highest civilian award in the country, after the Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan.

Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, recognizes distinguished service in various fields.
