New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) did not attend the opposition meeting held on Wednesday to discuss issues related to the Election Commission, stating that it is no longer a constituent of the INDIA bloc. AAP MP Sanjay Singh said the party’s decision was based on its current political position and maintained that while AAP supports the opposition’s impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, it will continue to operate independently.
AAP leaders said the party exited the INDIA alliance on July 28, 2025, arguing that the bloc was formed specifically for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Sanjay Singh reiterated that since AAP is not part of the opposition alliance anymore, there was no question of attending the meeting organised under the INDIA bloc banner.
However, he clarified that AAP would continue supporting issues where it shares common ground with other opposition parties.
Speaking on the Election Commission issue, Sanjay Singh said AAP supports the impeachment motion moved against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He said the party has been raising concerns over the functioning of EC both inside Parliament and through public protests. AAP has also appealed for participation in a planned protest related to electoral issues, stating that matters concerning voting rights affect citizens across the country.
AAP has also raised objections over changes made to Form 6, which is used for adding names to electoral rolls. The party has alleged that the changes are unlawful and unconstitutional, while demanding greater transparency in the electoral process.
AAP leaders believe the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections will be an important political challenge for the party. With Congress remaining a major opposition force in Punjab, AAP is expected to continue its political attacks against the party both in the state and nationally.
Party leaders also believe that internal differences within opposition parties could impact the political contest in Punjab.
The party’s position indicates that while it may support opposition initiatives on specific issues, it does not intend to function as part of the INDIA bloc. AAP leaders have emphasised an independent political approach while preparing for upcoming electoral battles.
