New Delhi: In a significant development, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has not found any suitable candidate for the prestigious post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC Limited, after interviewing a dozen contenders on Tuesday morning.

The interviews were conducted via video conferencing and featured 12 senior-level aspirants from various Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), along with one serving IAS officer, Sanoj Kumar Jha.

According to a Dynamite News correspondent, despite a strong lineup of experienced candidates, the PESB concluded that none met the leadership requirements for the top role at India’s largest power generation company.

As a result, the Board has recommended the formation of a Search-cum-Selection Committee (SCSC) to identify a suitable candidate through an expanded selection process, potentially including professionals from outside the conventional PSU ecosystem.

NTPC, a Maharatna company, plays a crucial role in India’s energy sector and is currently steering the country’s energy transition by scaling up its renewable energy portfolio alongside conventional power generation. The position of CMD is critical for providing strategic direction during this transformation.

List of Applicants Interviewed:

  1. Shivam Srivastava, Director (Fuel), NTPC
  2. Bhupender Gupta, Director (Technical), THDC
  3. Ravindra Kumar, Director (Operations), NTPC
  4. Shaswattam, Executive Director, NTPC
  5. Somes Bandyopadhyay, Managing Director, GSECL
  6. Kapil Kumar Gupta, Director (Finance), MMTC

  11. Sanoj Kumar Jha (IAS: 1997), Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal
  12. Abhay Arun Harne, Director (Projects), MAHAGENCO

This outcome underscores the PESB’s emphasis on finding visionary and transformational leadership for NTPC during a pivotal time for the Indian power sector.
