Ankara: A 14-year-old girl died and 69 others were injured early Tuesday after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Marmaris in Türkiye's southwestern Mugla province, a cabinet minister said.

"According to initial findings, there has been no damage to residential buildings across the city. During the earthquake, a 14-year-old girl named Afranur Gunlu was taken to the hospital due to a panic attack, and unfortunately lost her life after all efforts," the country's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on social media platform X.

The quake occurred at a depth of 68 km and about 10 km off the Marmaris coast in the Mediterranean Sea. Although it caused no major structural damage, panic led many people to jump from heights or flee buildings.

Eight people were treated on an outpatient basis and discharged, while 46 received examination and treatment in emergency rooms, the minister said.

Türkiye is located on several major fault lines, making earthquakes a common occurrence.
