These prestigious honors, given by the Government of India, recognize individuals who have brought glory to society and the nation through exceptional contributions in their respective fields. These awards are announced annually on Republic Day, creating an atmosphere of pride and excitement across the country.
The Padma Awards are among India's highest civilian honors. They are presented in three categories - Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. These awards are considered the fourth highest civilian honour given by the Government of India. The Padma Awards are not only for renowned personalities but also for those working at the grassroots level whose contributions have been inspiring to society.
Padma Awards 2026 Announced; Who are the distinguished personalities being honoured?
The Padma Awards are given for outstanding service and achievements in various fields, including art, literature, education, science, medicine, sports, social service, civil service, trade and industry, engineering, public works, and public affairs. These awards do not discriminate on the basis of caste, religion, profession, position, or gender.
The Padma Awards were established in 1954. Since then, the nominees have been announced every year on the eve of Republic Day. Government employees working in public sector undertakings, except doctors and scientists, are generally ineligible for these awards.
The Government of India invites nominations for the Padma Awards every year. Any individual, organization, Member of Parliament, Member of Legislative Assembly, or Minister can suggest a deserving person. All nominations are then presented to the Padma Awards Committee, which is constituted annually by the Prime Minister. The committee's recommendations are approved by the Prime Minister and then the President. No Padma Award is given without the committee's recommendation.

Selected personalities are honored at a grand ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Awardees receive a certificate bearing the President's signature and seal and a medal. In addition, they are also given a replica of the medal, which they can wear at formal ceremonies.
