19-Day Parliament Monsoon Session Ends Without Breakthrough
New Delhi: Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die on Thursday, bringing the 19-day Monsoon Session of Parliament to an end amid prolonged political deadlock. Repeated disruptions, aggressive sloganeering and counter-protests by the BJP-led NDA government and Opposition parties severely affected legislative proceedings throughout the session, making it a complete washout, since it began on July 20.
The final sitting of the Lok Sabha lasted only a few minutes after the rendition of national song "Vande Mataram," as members from both sides continued raising slogans against each other. The tense atmosphere reflected the deep divide between the government and the Opposition, which remained unresolved despite repeated attempts at dialogue.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla did not deliver the customary valedictory address highlighting the House’s performance and productivity during the session. Sources said that in the last 15 years, this was possibly among the rare occasions when both Houses failed to conduct Question Hour and Rule 377 mentions.
Total six bills were passed during the Session, but the Opposition parties alleged that the legislations were cleared without detailed discussion as the government relied on voice votes amid protests. The ruling side maintained that parliamentary procedures were followed and accused the Opposition of disrupting proceedings.
Despite efforts to break the deadlock on the penultimate day, repeated disruptions kept the two sides at odds. The stand-off came into sharper focus on Wednesday when Home Minister Amit Shah offered to hold a discussion on the students protests and police action.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi described Amit Shah's offer as a "last minute attempt" and said the Opposition was not interested in listening to lecture from the Home Minister. The Congress leader questioned why discussions were not initiated earlier despite the Opposition raising the issue since the beginning of the session on July 20. What was the government and the Home Minister doing for the last three weeks, he further asked.
The student protest issue emerged as one of the biggest flashpoints of the Monsoon Session in both the Houses with the Opposition parties demanding accountability over allegations of police action against students protesting the NEET paper leak. Apart from the student issue, the controversy surrounding alleged irregularities linked to Ayodhya Ram Mandir donations was also strongly felt and echoed both inside and outside the Parliament premises.
Amid the continuing political deadlock, the government suddently brought the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) on to the scene at the last minute and referred it to the Joint Parliamentaray Committee (JPC). This further aggravated the Opposition, which was looking for an excuse to make fresh attacks on the government. The Opposition parties raised objection on the decision and demanded complete withdrawal of the proposed legislation.
The Monsoon Session 2026 witnessed back-to-back disruptions within the House and at the Parliament House complex as the ruling BJP and the Opposition remained locked in a political confrontation over key legislative, economic and religious issues. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju pointed out that during the 19-day Session, which started on July 20, the House functioned for just 39 per cent of its scheduled time.
