New Delhi: Congress leader Pawan Khera has approached the Supreme Court of India challenging the rejection of his anticipatory bail plea by the Gauhati High Court in a case registered by the Assam Police.
The Gauhati High Court had on April 24 dismissed Khera’s plea for anticipatory bail in connection with a defamation and forgery case. The case stems from allegations he made against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The order was delivered by Justice Parthivjyoti Saikia, who observed that the case involves serious allegations, including the possible use of forged documents. The court also noted concerns that Khera might evade the investigation, stating that custodial interrogation could be necessary.
Following the High Court’s decision, Khera filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court seeking relief. The move comes as the Congress leader faces legal proceedings initiated by the Assam Police based on a complaint filed earlier this month.
The case originated after Khera alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma possessed multiple passports and had undisclosed business interests abroad. These claims triggered a political row, with the Bharatiya Janata Party strongly criticising the Congress leader.
Subsequently, a case was registered against Khera on April 6, accusing him of defamation and related offences.

Khera had initially approached the Telangana High Court, citing his residence in Hyderabad. He argued that the case against him was politically motivated. The High Court granted him interim protection on April 10.
However, the Supreme Court later stayed that relief and directed him to seek legal remedy in Assam. The apex court also clarified that it would not interfere with proceedings before the Assam courts.
