Jakarta: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Tuesday conferred Indonesia's highest civilian honour, the Bintang Republik Indonesia Adipurna, by President Prabowo Subianto during a state ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.

The prestigious award was presented in recognition of PM Modi's contribution to strengthening bilateral ties and strategic cooperation between India and Indonesia.

Indonesia's highest state honour

Announcing the award, President Prabowo Subianto described it as Indonesia's highest national honour and said it reflected the deep civilisational ties and strategic trust shared by the two countries.

The honour is awarded to individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the unity, continuity and prosperity of the Republic of Indonesia.

PM Modi dedicates honour to people of India

Accepting the award, Prime Minister Modi thanked President Prabowo, the Indonesian government and its people, saying the honour belonged to the people of India.

"This honour belongs to the crores of Indians. It reflects the sentiments of the people of Indonesia and the historic, deep-rooted bonds between our two nations," PM Modi said during a joint press conference.

Focus on stronger bilateral ties

The Prime Minister said the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, established in 2018, has gained new momentum, with cooperation expanding across development, defence, technology, culture, education and security.

His visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations, with discussions covering defence cooperation, trade, maritime security and critical minerals.

About the Bintang Adipurna

Established in 1959, the Bintang Republik Indonesia Adipurna is Indonesia's highest state honour. It is conferred by the Indonesian President on individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the country. For foreign leaders, the award recognises their role in enhancing Indonesia's friendship and strategic cooperation with other nations.

PM Modi is on a three-nation tour that includes Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.
