New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Sweden’s highest civilian honour, the Royal Order of Polar Star, Commander Grand Cross, during his visit to Gothenburg on Sunday. The award marked the 31st international honour received by the Indian Prime Minister from a foreign nation.

The Royal Order of Polar Star is Sweden’s highest recognition that can be awarded to a Head of Government. Originally instituted in 1748, the honour is traditionally presented for exceptional civic contributions, dedication to public service, scientific advancement, literary achievements and contributions to society.

Warm Welcome In Gothenburg

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Gothenburg as part of his ongoing five-nation diplomatic tour across Europe and the Gulf region. He was welcomed by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson shortly after landing in the Nordic country.

Following the ceremony, Modi thanked the Swedish leadership and highlighted the warmth shown by the Indian community in Sweden. Sharing his remarks on social media, he said the Indian diaspora in Gothenburg continues to strengthen ties between the two countries through its contributions and engagement.

The visit marks Modi’s second trip to Sweden after his 2018 visit for the India-Nordic Summit.

Focus On Trade, Technology And Green Transition

Soon after his arrival, the two leaders held bilateral talks focused on expanding cooperation in several strategic sectors. Discussions covered trade, defence, innovation, green transition, artificial intelligence, resilient supply chains, climate action and emerging technologies.

Officials from both countries also reviewed the broader India-Sweden partnership and explored ways to deepen economic cooperation. Bilateral trade between India and Sweden reportedly reached nearly USD 7.75 billion in 2025.

The leaders also discussed collaboration in startups, space technology and people-to-people exchanges as part of efforts to strengthen long-term strategic ties.

Meetings With Industry Leaders

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi also interacted with global business leaders, including Maersk chairperson Robert Maersk Uggla.

According to Modi, the discussions focused on investment opportunities in India, particularly in sectors such as logistics, ports and infrastructure development. The engagement formed part of India’s wider outreach to European industries and investors during the diplomatic tour.
