Dubai: A routine Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a terrifying mid-air emergency after a violent confrontation erupted inside the cockpit. Flight FZ1073, carrying more than 170 passengers, was cruising at high altitude when the aircraft suddenly began losing altitude.
Passenger accounts and officials said the situation involved an alleged attack on Indian Captain Smit Machchhar by his Omani co-pilot. The aircraft reportedly descended sharply, triggering an emergency response as the crew struggled to regain control.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was eventually diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Machchhar and the other pilot were taken for medical treatment. The precise motive behind the confrontation remains under investigation, while Flydubai has cautioned against premature conclusions.
Despite being seriously injured, Machchhar continued resisting during the confrontation. According to Israeli officials, he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and help overpower the attacker.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later praised Machchhar's actions, saying the Indian captain helped prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome. Netanyahu said the pilot's actions helped save 174 people on board.
