PM Modi heads to Sweden; two-day visit to focus on AI, green transition

PM Modi has begun a two-day visit to Sweden aimed at strengthening ties in AI, green technology, trade, defence and innovation as part of India’s broader Europe outreach.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Gothenburg, Sweden, on Sunday as part of his ongoing five-nation diplomatic tour across Europe and the Gulf region. The visit comes at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Focus on Strategic Cooperation

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, discussions during the visit will review the full scope of India-Sweden relations while exploring new partnerships in emerging sectors.

Key areas expected to dominate the talks include artificial intelligence, green transition technologies, climate action, defence manufacturing, resilient supply chains, startups and advanced manufacturing.

Officials said both countries are also likely to discuss expanding cooperation in innovation, digital technologies and space research.

Bilateral Talks in Gothenburg

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold delegation-level and restricted talks with Kristersson in Gothenburg, one of Sweden’s major industrial and innovation centres. The discussions are expected to focus on increasing bilateral investments and strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.

Indian Ambassador to Sweden Anurag Bhushan said the visit has generated strong interest among Swedish industries and institutions, particularly due to India’s growing role in global manufacturing and technology sectors.

Industry and Business Engagements

The Prime Minister is also expected to interact with leading Swedish and European business executives during the visit. A major highlight will be his participation in the European Round Table for Industry, where he is likely to address business leaders alongside Kristersson and Ursula von der Leyen.

Industry representatives from companies including Volvo Group have highlighted India’s growing importance as a hub for innovation, engineering and digital manufacturing.

Part of Wider Europe Outreach

The Sweden visit follows Modi’s engagements in the UAE and the Netherlands and will be followed by a trip to Norway for the upcoming India-Nordic Summit.

Leaders from Nordic countries are expected to discuss cooperation in renewable energy, sustainability, defence, Arctic policy and future technologies.
