Honouring Mahatma Gandhi on His Death Anniversary
New Delhi: India marked the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30 by remembering the Father of the Nation and reflecting on his timeless ideals.
Leaders across the political spectrum paid homage to Gandhi, acknowledging his lasting influence on India’s moral, social, and political foundations.
The day, observed annually as Martyrs’ Day, commemorates Gandhi’s sacrifice and his lifelong commitment to truth, non-violence, and national unity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, highlighting Mahatma Gandhi’s emphasis on Swadeshi and its relevance in modern India. In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister expressed deep respect for Gandhi and stated that Bapu’s ideals continue to guide India’s journey toward becoming a developed and self-reliant nation.

He underlined that Gandhi’s focus on duty, indigenous production, and ethical living remains central to India’s national vision and development goals. PM Modi also noted that Gandhi’s personality and achievements continue to inspire citizens to walk the path of responsibility, integrity, and service to the nation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute, recalling Gandhi’s extraordinary role in uniting a nation divided by language, region, and caste. He credited Gandhi with giving direction and depth to the freedom movement and emphasised that his ideas—particularly those linking Swadeshi, independence, and cleanliness—remain relevant even today. Shah noted that Gandhi’s vision of a strong and harmonious India would continue to inspire future generations.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari offered his respectful salutations to Mahatma Gandhi, joining leaders across the country in remembering Bapu’s legacy.
Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju shared a more detailed tribute, highlighting Gandhi’s global influence. Rijiju described Gandhi’s life philosophy as being rooted in truth, non-violence, harmony, and compassion.
He emphasised that Gandhi’s moral teachings serve not only as a guiding force for India but also as a beacon for the world in promoting peace, ethics, tolerance, and human dignity. According to Rijiju, Gandhi’s ideas provide a strong foundation for building a just, inclusive, and humane society.
Mahatma Gandhi, born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, remains one of the most revered figures in India’s history. Through his unwavering belief in Ahimsa (non-violence) and civil disobedience, he mobilised millions and played a decisive role in ending British colonial rule.
His leadership transformed the freedom struggle into a mass movement grounded in moral courage and peaceful resistance. Assassinated on January 30, 1948, Gandhi’s death shocked the nation but strengthened his legacy. Today, his life and ideals continue to inspire India and the world, reminding humanity of the power of peace, unity, and ethical leadership.
