PM Modi meets Indonesian President Prabowo (Img: Modi X)
Jakarta: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held bilateral talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto during his official state visit to Indonesia, aimed at strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries and expanding cooperation across key sectors.
Prime Minister Modi was accompanied by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during the high-level meeting in Jakarta.
The visit marks the first bilateral engagement between India and Indonesia since both countries elevated their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.
The leaders are expected to discuss ways to deepen collaboration in defence, maritime security, trade, investment, critical minerals, and regional cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi received a ceremonial welcome upon his arrival in Jakarta on Monday. His aircraft was escorted by Indonesian Air Force fighter jets as it entered Indonesian airspace, and President Prabowo personally welcomed him at the airport. The reception also featured a traditional Indonesian cultural performance.
The visit is being undertaken at the invitation of President Prabowo and marks PM Modi's fourth visit to Indonesia.
India and Indonesia have significantly expanded defence cooperation in recent years through high-level exchanges, joint military exercises and defence industry collaboration. Indonesia's acquisition of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile has further strengthened strategic ties between the two countries.
Trade and investment are also expected to feature prominently during the discussions. Indonesia is India's second-largest trading partner within ASEAN, with bilateral trade reaching approximately USD 24.78 billion in 2025-26.
The two sides are also likely to explore cooperation in critical minerals, with Indonesia possessing some of the world's largest reserves of nickel, bauxite, copper and tin resources considered vital for India's clean energy and manufacturing ambitions.
Indonesia is the first stop of Prime Minister Modi's three-nation tour, which will also take him to Australia and New Zealand. The visit is expected to reinforce India's Act East Policy and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions) vision while strengthening partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.
