President Droupadi Murmu addresses parliament, highlights India’s progress and cultural pride

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu addressed the joint session of Parliament on Wednesday, outlining the nation’s key achievements and setting the tone for India’s journey towards becoming a developed country. Calling the past year memorable, she said it reflected both India’s rapid progress and its rich cultural heritage.

“I am extremely pleased to address this session of Parliament,” the President said. “The last year has been a celebration of India’s growth and traditions.” She noted that the country is marking the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram and paying tribute to its creator, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. President Murmu also congratulated Members of Parliament for holding a special discussion on the subject.

Tributes to National Icons

During her address, the President recalled several important national commemorations. She said the country observed the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, while the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda was celebrated nationwide, highlighting his contribution to the tribal community.

She added that events marking the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel strengthened the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. The birth anniversary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, she said, united the nation through music and cultural harmony. According to the President, remembering the contributions of great leaders inspires the younger generation and accelerates India’s march towards development.

India Enters a New Phase

President Murmu said that with the arrival of 2026, India has entered the second phase of the 21st century. Reflecting on the past 25 years, she described them as a period marked by achievements, learning, and transformative experiences.

“In the last 10–11 years, India has strengthened its foundations across all sectors,” she said, adding that the current year is crucial in laying the groundwork for a developed India.

Focus on Rural Development

Highlighting legislative initiatives, the President spoke about the enactment of the Developed India–Village Development Act, aimed at boosting employment and growth in rural areas. She said the reform ensures 125 days of guaranteed employment in villages.

As she mentioned the new law, treasury bench MPs from the NDA-BJP applauded, while opposition members protested, demanding its withdrawal.

The President’s address combined reflection on India’s heritage with a forward-looking vision, underlining both achievements so far and priorities for the years ahead.
