Varanasi (UP): Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed a spectacular aerial display by the Indian Air Force (IAF) at Namo Ghat in Varanasi on Sunday, as the force marked its 94th anniversary with a showcase of India's military aviation capabilities. Organised under the theme “Wings Over Ganga”, the Air Force Day Aerial Display 2026 brought the spirit of India's aerial strength to the skies above the holy city.
The event showcased the Indian Air Force's operational capabilities through carefully coordinated aircraft formations and precision flying manoeuvres. The presence of PM Modi added significance to the celebrations, which highlighted the force's contribution to national security and its evolving combat and transport capabilities.
One of the highlights was the Kailash Formation, led by the C-130J Super Hercules, a specialised aircraft used for transport and special operations. Two An-32 medium transport aircraft flew on either side in a distinctive V-shaped formation, known as a “vic”. The formation highlighted the IAF's air transport capabilities and its ability to support airborne missions and specialised operations.
The Vishwanath Formation featured Su-30MKI fighter jets returning along the axis of the viewing platform before performing the iconic three-aircraft “Trishul” split. The manoeuvre demonstrated the pilots' coordination and precision in executing complex aerial routines. Another highlight was a six-aircraft group that appeared in an arrowhead formation, showcasing the Indian Air Force's focus on air superiority and combat readiness.
The aerial display offered spectators a glimpse of the professionalism, training and operational capabilities of the IAF. With “Wings Over Ganga” as its theme, the event turned Varanasi's skies into a stage for India's air power and military aviation excellence.
