New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a major attack on the central Modi government, saying that the 20-year-old MNREGA law was dismantled in a single day. Rahul Gandhi termed the Developed India G-Ram-G Bill, which replaces MNREGA, as "anti-village and anti-state." In a post shared on social media, he wrote that this new law abolishes the rights-based and demand-driven employment guarantee. According to him, it will be controlled from Delhi, which will weaken the role of states and panchayats.
Last night, the Modi government demolished twenty years of MGNREGA in one day.
VB–G RAM G isn’t a “revamp” of MGNREGA. It demolishes the rights-based, demand-driven guarantee and turns it into a rationed scheme which is controlled from Delhi. It is anti-state and anti-village…

Rahul Gandhi said that MNREGA had empowered rural laborers with bargaining power. As a result, exploitation decreased, forced migration reduced, and wage rates improved. He said that this scheme led to the development of rural infrastructure and improved working conditions, which are now being undermined.
The Congress leader recalled that during the COVID-19 pandemic, MNREGA proved to be a lifeline for millions of people. When the economy came to a standstill, this scheme saved people from hunger and debt. Rahul Gandhi claimed that women benefited the most from MNREGA, and the number of workdays for women increased year after year.
Rahul Gandhi alleged that a law with such a significant social and economic impact was forcibly passed without scrutiny by a Standing Committee. He said that despite the opposition's demands, expert advice and public hearings were not conducted, which is a matter of serious concern.
Rahul Gandhi said that MGNREGA has been one of the world's most successful poverty alleviation programs. He warned that the Congress party, along with laborers, panchayats, and states, will form a nationwide front against this law and will fight to get it repealed.
